overview
AllTrails is a globally-known platform for discovering, planning, and embarking on trail adventures. The company boasts over 50 million registered users in 100 countries. As the sole dedicated map-focused product designer at the company, I collaborated across scrum teams and with external data providers like OSM and Mapbox to create a consistent experience across the maps within the web and app products.

Improve map-based exploration
I advocated for and got buy-in to revisit core functionality to address AllTrails members' biggest pain points when it came to exploring routes on the map on mobile and web platforms. As a result of this change, mobile map adoption more than doubled, from 12% to 28%. More over, the number of mobile users saving routes from the map view increased by 15%.
Support navigation and create consistent map-based controls
Update map controls and elevate the navigation experience by reducing the cognitive load of map reading for members who glance at the app during key navigation decision points on the trail.
The new navigation mode resulted in a 1% net (12% relative) increase in week-1 retention for users navigating in their first week.
Create a rich map base layer
I worked with land managers, OSM, and internal stakeholders to create an updated AllTrails map layer that provided richer information to hikers, minimized impacts on delicate ecosystems, and protected hikers from unmaintained and potentially dangerous routes. The new map layer was well-received by land manager partners and the general public.
